A Christmas tree standing inside a jail gives this 1919 glass negative its unusual character. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented city life and federal institutions in the early twentieth century, made the image, and the title came from information written on the negative or its sleeve rather than from a verified source. Holiday decorations in a place of confinement were a recognizable theme of the period, when charitable groups and local organizations often brought cheer to people held in custody. Look closely at the surface: streaks and blemishes from the aging of the glass coating are part of the record.
