A Christmas tree labeled with the Daniels name anchors this 1919 glass negative from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented much of Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century. The date comes from related negatives in the same range rather than a written note, so the exact season and setting are best read as likely rather than certain. Decorated trees were a common household ritual by then, and the studio's large 8 by 6 inch plates recorded considerable detail. Viewers may notice streaks and faint blemishes, which stem from natural deterioration in the original coatings.
