Its title calls the subject the first Christmas card, dated 1846, but the record marks that attribution as unverified and describes the picture as a copy. The card usually credited as the first commercial Christmas card was commissioned by Henry Cole in London in 1843 and illustrated by John Callcott Horsley. The glass negative was a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French and belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, made long after the 1840s. Streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coatings are visible.
