Here Santa Claus has traded his sleigh for an Eames chair, the molded plywood seat that Charles and Ray Eames developed in the mid-1940s and that was soon in homes across America. The drawing is in ink and watercolor and dates to 1948, when the couple's furniture was becoming a emblem of modern domestic taste. Pairing the figure of Santa with a piece of contemporary design makes the card a light commentary on postwar comfort and the holiday's new suburban settings.
