The title is a string of letters from the Linotype keyboard, ETAOIN SHRDLU, the order in which the most common English letters sat on hot-metal typesetting machines. Printers typed it as a test line, so it reads as a placeholder rather than a real name. The gouache, dated 1936 or 1937, shows a sculpture exhibition in New York State organized under the Federal Art Project, the New Deal program that employed artists during the Depression and mounted shows across the country. Exhibitions like this gave working sculptors paid commissions and gave local audiences a rare chance to see modern three-dimensional work.
