Edison appears here in left profile, seated at his desk and writing, a quieter view than the studio portraits and laboratory scenes that usually represent him. The caption card dates the photograph to about 1905, when Edison was in his late fifties and running a sprawling network of companies from his West Orange, New Jersey, laboratory complex. The print was copyrighted by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer who made a number of portraits of public figures in that period. Edison's habit of constant note-taking and correspondence is worth keeping in mind when looking at it, since the desk itself was where much of his work was planned and recorded.
