Jennie Yeamans, the stage comedian shown in this tall color lithograph, is pictured alongside dogs, a detail that points to the production's canine theme and to the animal acts that were popular on the American stage in the 1880s. The poster was printed in 1887 by the Forbes Company of Boston and New York, and it carries a copyright notice in Yeamans's own name, a sign of how much a performer's image and reputation counted for in that era of touring theater. Yeamans (1862–1906) was a well-known singer and comic actress who built her career on lively character roles, and posters like this one were meant to be seen from street corners and theater lobbies as much as read up close.
