The sphinx and pyramids on this 1898 color lithograph point to Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, the setting that the poster uses to frame its emperor. The poster advertises *The Little Corporal*, a comic opera with a libretto by Harry B. Smith and music by Ludwig Englander, produced by Francis Wilson and Company under manager Ariel Barney. It is signed "By an Old Master" and dated 1898 over the name Th. Nast, the caricaturist best known for his political cartoons and his later Santa Claus illustrations. Comic operas of this period often treated famous historical figures with lighthearted exaggeration, and this design shows that approach in its bold color and exotic motifs.
