Few places in Boston carried more meaning for its people than Beacon Hill, the rise on the Shawmut Peninsula where a signal beacon had stood since the 1630s to warn of danger. This ink and watercolor drawing, made sometime between 1775 and 1780, looks out over the town from that height during the years when Boston was the center of the conflict between the colonists and British troops. The Siege of Boston and the British evacuation in March 1776 left the city scarred by war and occupation, and a view from the hill of the period captures that uneasy moment. The drawing is worth a close look for how the watercolor washes set the town's rooftops and streets against open sky.
