Here the focus is on C. Bascom Slemp, the Virginia politician who served as secretary to President Calvin Coolidge, receiving a briefcase from a group of correspondents in January 1925. Small presentations like this were a familiar part of Washington life, when members of the press corps who covered the White House gathered to mark an occasion with a gift. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the city's officials and events during the 1910s and 1920s. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating, which are worth noticing when you look at the image.
