This view looks across the right bank of the Irtysh River at Tobolsk, a city in western Siberia that served as the administrative center of the region for much of the imperial period, and the photograph was taken from the southeast. The image survives as a glass negative made from three separate exposures, one each through a red, green and blue filter, a method Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii used to record color on black-and-white plates in 1912. The levee along the bank reflects how river towns in the area were shaped by the water, with embankments built to protect the shore from spring floods.
