This photograph shows Theodore Roosevelt aboard the Imperator, a German liner of the Hamburg-America Line that was among the largest ships afloat when it entered service in 1913. The record dates the picture to June 1914, a few weeks before the outbreak of the First World War, when transatlantic crossings were still routine for public figures like Roosevelt. After the war, Britain seized the ship as a reparations prize and renamed it Berengaria, which is why the catalog lists it under that later name. The picture of a former president reading on deck captures the leisurely side of ocean travel in an era when liners were symbols of national prestige.
