Children playing in sand, with a dog at the center of the scene, make this one of the more playful images to come out of the Roosevelt household around 1904. The catalog record attributes it to Theodore Roosevelt's children and credits Edward S. Curtis, the photographer best known for his later work documenting Native American life. The caption information is old and not independently verified, so the identities of the children should be treated as tentative. Still, the image offers a rare glimpse of the White House family at ease, during the years when Roosevelt's large household was often featured in the press.
