Sand, a dog, and a game of burial make up this scene, which the caption card dates to about 1904, when Theodore Roosevelt's children were growing up in the White House. The photoprint is credited to Edward S. Curtis, a photographer better known for his portraits of Native American peoples, and it shows a looser, more playful side of the family than formal presidential portraits did. The date and circumstances come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified, but the picture still offers a rare glimpse of domestic life in the Roosevelt household during his presidency.
