Theodore Roosevelt is caught at the moment before he steps down from an open automobile, a small, unposed gesture that was unusual for a public figure's photograph at the time. The record dates the picture to March 29, 1911, but its details come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so the exact location and occasion are uncertain. By then Roosevelt was a former president, back from his African expedition and European tour, and he was still among the most photographed men in the country.
