This photograph shows Theodore Roosevelt standing in an open automobile, waving to a crowd in El Paso, Texas, on or around March 20, 1911. He had left the presidency in 1909 and was touring the West, so the scene captures a former president still drawing large public crowds. El Paso sits on the border with Mexico, where the Mexican Revolution had begun the previous year, which gave a visit like this added interest. Crowds gathered along the streets to see him, and the photograph shows the informal, open-air style of political appearances in that period.
