A sloped launching ramp at Sile, a town on the Anatolian coast of the Black Sea, is the subject here, with a lifeboat set up to be lowered or hauled between the shore and the water. The caption, in Ottoman Turkish and French, identifies it as part of a series on ships and lifesaving stations along that coast. The photograph belongs to the Abdul-Hamid II Collection, a group of images assembled for the sultan's albums during his reign, which ended in 1909. Such pictures document the Ottoman state's effort to modernize its navy and coastal rescue services in the late nineteenth century, when shipwrecks on the Black Sea were a serious concern.
