The carved pedestal beneath the Hippodrome's Egyptian obelisk sets this view apart, its relief panels showing the Byzantine emperor and court in the imperial box as chariot races unfold below. The obelisk was first raised at Karnak under Thutmose III, then brought to Constantinople and re-erected in the Hippodrome by Theodosius I in 390. This print dates from between 1880 and 1893, when Istanbul's Byzantine monuments drew growing interest from photographers, and its captions in Ottoman Turkish and French reflect that audience.
