Its title, *The Death of Columbus*, points to a scene no artist could have witnessed, so this chromolithograph is an imagined scene rather than a record of events. Columbus died in Valladolid, Spain, in 1506, his later years clouded by disputes over his governorship and his treatment of colonists. Boston's Prang Educational Company issued the color print in 1893, the year of the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, when Columbus was a national subject.
