Columbus returning to Barcelona is the subject here, and the scene draws on the 1493 homecoming, when Ferdinand and Isabella received him at the Spanish court after his first Atlantic voyage. The print is a chromolithograph, a color process that reached its height in the late 1800s and made large, vivid historical scenes affordable for schools, parlors and public buildings. Images like this one were part of a wider American effort to celebrate Columbus as a national hero, especially around the 400th anniversary of his landfall in 1892. Look closely at the crowd and costumes, which show how artists of that era imagined the Spanish court.
