Few images of Columbus show him in quite this setting: a chromolithograph from 1893, issued by the Prang Educational Company of Boston, that places him before the Spanish sovereigns at Barcelona rather than at sea or on shore. The record names Ferdinand V and Isabella I as the rulers depicted, and it also lists Indigenous people of the West Indies, a reminder that Columbus's return from his first voyage brought captives and Caribbean goods to the court. The Prang firm was known for colorful educational prints made for American schoolrooms, so the picture was meant to teach as much as to illustrate. Its date sits in the years of the 1892 Columbian quadricentennial, when Columbus was a popular national hero.
