Columbus stepping ashore in the Caribbean is the moment this hand-colored lithograph captures, with the Indigenous figures dressed in the clothing the record places in the 1490s. Columbus reached the Bahamas in October 1492 and landed on the island he named San Salvador, an encounter that began sustained European contact with the Americas. Printed sometime between 1860 and 1880, the picture reflects how the voyage was romanticized for American audiences of that period. Because the color was applied by hand, individual copies of such prints can differ noticeably in tone and detail.
