Rather than a street or civic scene, this picture takes as its subject the last years of Christopher Columbus, who died in Valladolid, Spain, in 1506. He never gave up his belief that he had reached Asia, even though his voyages opened the Atlantic world to European exploration and colonization. By the end he had fallen out of favor at the Spanish court and lost much of his authority over the lands he had claimed. The city board it hangs under is named for the explorer, so the connection between the painting and the Ohio city rests on that shared name.
