The Cascades name a volcanic mountain range that runs north to south through Oregon, with peaks such as Mount Hood, the state's highest point at about 11,250 feet. The range was built by volcanic activity over millions of years, and its snowfields, rivers and conifer forests shaped travel and settlement in the region. Emigrants on the Oregon Trail had to get over or around these mountains, and the Columbia River's gorge through the range became a key route west. Images of the Cascades often stress the scale of the peaks against open sky and the dense forests below them.
