The Cascades of the Columbia River, where the water drops through a series of rapids in the Gorge, were a bottleneck for travelers and freight, so whoever controlled the portage controlled much of the river trade. A block-house here was a small fortified log building, typically with a second story that projected over the walls so defenders could fire down on attackers. Blockhouses like this one were put up during the Indian conflicts of the mid-1850s to protect the portage road, the landing, and the settlers and supply traffic that depended on them. Its log construction and the rough clearing around it show how quickly the frontier was being fortified.
