Cape Horn is a basalt headland rising above the Columbia River Gorge, where the cliffs drop sharply to the water and the river bends through a narrow channel. The site became well known once the Historic Columbia River Highway was carved along the gorge in the 1910s, and engineers used its curving grades to give travelers wide views of the river and the falls upstream. Look closely at the rock faces and the road's placement, which show how builders worked with steep terrain to open the gorge to motor travel. The scene reflects a period when the Columbia was becoming a major route for both commerce and tourism.
