Rather than the fight itself, this first plate turns to the crowd around the bullring: the ticket office, along with the blind men and beggars who gathered near the entrance. Lake Price, an English photographer and artist, drew the scenes from sketches made on site and transferred them to stone, and the color lithograph was printed by the London firm Hullmandel and Walton. The "No. 1" inscription suggests it was the opening sheet of a numbered series. The print offers a record of how public spectacle and poverty existed side by side in Madrid during the 1860s.
