Chulos, the assistants who draw a bull across the ring with capes, are the focus of this color lithograph, which sets them apart from the picadors and banderilleros who follow later in a corrida. The print is signed on the stone by Lake Price and carries the number 15, suggesting it belonged to a numbered series. Made between 1860 and 1870, it reflects the fascination that British and other European visitors and artists had with Spanish bullfighting during those years. Its color and the bold movement of the bull and the men around it show how lithography could convey the drama of the ring to viewers who never saw a fight in person.
