Few gallery subjects capture the moments between the fights as directly as this one, which shows the toreros resting in the arena while the next bull is being readied. Lake Price, an English artist and photographer active in the mid-nineteenth century, signed his name on the lithographic stone, and the print is numbered 21 in its series. By the 1860s, bullfighting had become a popular spectacle in Spain, drawing foreign travelers and artists eager to record its costumes and rituals. The color lithograph, made from stone, gives a sense of the bright costumes and the tense pause before the next charge.
