The subject here is the *salto tras cuernos*, a leap in which a bullfighter vaults over the charging bull's horns. It stood out in the ring because it demanded timing and nerve rather than the sword work that usually decided a fight. This color lithograph, signed on the stone and numbered 17, comes from the 1860s, when bullfighting drew large crowds in Spanish cities and fascinated British and French travelers. Printed images like this one turned a split-second feat into a repeatable picture, and the color gives a sense of the bright costumes and the sand of the arena.
