The moment shown here comes before the bull enters the ring: an alguazil, a local official who traditionally presided over the opening of a bullfight, hands over the keys to the toril, the gate that holds the bulls. Lake Price, an English photographer and artist active in the mid-nineteenth century, made this color lithograph in the 1860s, and the stone is signed and numbered 7. Prints like it drew European audiences curious about Spanish customs, and the ceremony it records reflects the formal ritual that began each fight.
