Hamilton, a village in Madison County in central New York, is the place pictured, and this bird's-eye view shows it as it stood in 1885. The town is best known as the home of the college on its hill, which was then called Madison University and took the name Colgate in 1890. Lucien R. Burleigh, whose firm produced many town views in the late nineteenth century, drew the scene from an elevated vantage point so that streets, churches, and campus buildings could be made out at a glance. Maps like this were often valued by residents as a portrait of their own community.
