En España amanece" translates as "Spain is dawning," and the sunrise it promises is paired with the rallying cry "Arriba España" ("Rise up, Spain"). The poster was issued by the Falange Española, the fascist party founded in 1933, and it dates from the Spanish Civil War of 1936 to 1939. Its subject is a group of people giving the raised-arm salute, a gesture the Falange adopted as its public emblem of unity and devotion. Posters like this one were used to rally supporters and project a sense of national renewal on both sides of the conflict, which makes it a useful window into the propaganda of the period.
