A 1940 silkscreen poster from the Federal Art Project announces the dedication of the Ida B. Wells Homes, a public housing development on Chicago's South Side, and a parade along South Parkway that marked the occasion. The homes were named for Ida B. Wells-Barnett, the journalist and anti-lynching crusader who spent much of her life in Chicago, and the choice of name tied a new federal housing project to the memory of a Black reformer. The poster's bold color and graphic lettering reflect the Works Progress Administration's wider effort to bring public art into neighborhoods, and it also records a moment when public housing was new and widely promoted as a route to better living conditions.
