A poster advertising a Lincoln-Douglas debate event at the DuPage County centennial in West Chicago on August 27 sets this print apart from others on the board. The original 1858 debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas, held during their contest for an Illinois Senate seat, drew large crowds and remain among the most studied political exchanges in American history. Issued as a silkscreen by the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, the poster reflects how New Deal programs used local celebrations to employ artists and build community pride.
