Elmhurst, a suburb in DuPage County west of Chicago, is the place named here, and this poster announces its Flag Day observance on June 18, 1939, as part of the county's centennial year. DuPage County was organized in 1839, so the event marked a hundred years of local government. The Federal theater Project, one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored the printing, which reflects the New Deal's practice of using public art to promote community celebrations. The silkscreen color and the artist's signature, Beauparlant, place it among the many WPA posters made across the country during the late 1930s.
