The subject goes by the nickname Buzzard Pete, and the record does not explain how he earned it, though the name hints at a local reputation in the mountain West. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative dates to about 1905 and was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold photographs of western scenery, towns and everyday people to a national market. The plate is cracked down its left side. It came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, which points to the region where it was first held.
