Few patent medicines were promoted as widely as Vegetine, a sarsaparilla-based tonic sold as a cure-all that purified the blood. This color lithograph is undated in its record and tagged both as a medicine advertisement and as a toy, a reminder of how such remedies reached households through eye-catching cards that people might keep or pass to children. Vegetine was marketed by H. R. Stevens of Boston in the late 19th century, when patent medicine makers relied on bold color and striking pictures to stand out in shops, newspapers and crowded public spaces.
