This engraving shows *The Amazon*, a bronzed zinc sculpture of a warrior woman fighting a wildcat, cast by the F.L. Mott Iron Company of New York. The catalog it appeared in, *Masterpieces of the Centennial International Exhibition*, dates the work to the 1876 Philadelphia fair, where American foundries showed statuary to a national audience. Zinc castings with a bronze finish were a cheaper alternative to solid bronze, so pieces like this one reached parlors, parks, and gardens across the country. The engraving preserves the sculpture's design for readers who never saw the original on display.
