This oil painting is dated between 1865 and 1895, and its gallery placement ties it to the third day of the battle, July 3, 1863, when Confederate infantry launched the assault later known as Pickett's Charge. Roughly 12,000 to 15,000 men advanced across about a mile of open fields toward the Union center on Cemetery Ridge, and most were driven back with heavy losses. The defeat marked a turning point, ending Robert E. Lee's invasion of the North. Because the picture was made years after the fighting, its artist was working from accounts and memory rather than from the field itself. It entered the Library of Congress as a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919.
