Dated 1918, this view shows the ground Confederate troops crossed on July 3, 1863, in the assault known as Pickett's Charge. Roughly 12,000 soldiers advanced over open fields toward Cemetery Ridge, and Union artillery and infantry drove them back, ending the battle and Lee's invasion of the North. By 1918 the Gettysburg National Military Park had been established and states were placing monuments across the field, which turned the battlefield into a place of remembrance. The peaceful farmland in the picture is the same ground that saw so much loss.
