Its headline casts wartime food rationing as a matter of gratitude: a spread of grain, meat and produce is captioned "This is what God gives us," and readers are asked what they will give up so that others may live. The United States Food Administration, which Herbert Hoover led after Congress created the agency in 1917, issued the poster as part of a campaign urging American households to eat less wheat, meat, fats and sugar so more food could be shipped to Europe. Its pairing of abundance with sacrifice explains why it appears alongside Thanksgiving material, since the holiday's emphasis on plenty made the appeal especially pointed.
