The Harvest Lunch" shows a midday meal taken in the fields, the kind of break that brought farm workers together when the crops were in. The print is credited to Bufford, the Boston lithography firm of John H. Bufford, which produced many sentimental and genre scenes for popular sale in the 1870s and 1880s. Images like this idealized rural labor and the abundance of the harvest at a time when American farming was rapidly changing. Its place on a Thanksgiving board reflects how the holiday grew out of older harvest celebrations, when a good crop was a reason to give thanks.
