Three servicemen appear in this glass negative: Maj. Theodore Roosevelt Jr., Lt. C.R. Holmes, and Sgt. J.A. Murphy. Roosevelt Jr. was the eldest son of President Theodore Roosevelt and served as an army officer in the First World War, when he was wounded in France in 1918. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, made many images of military and public figures in this period, but the date and setting of this picture are not recorded. The names come from the agency's own notes and have not been independently verified.
