Filed in the George Grantham Bain Collection as a glass negative, this portrait is labeled "Mrs. T. Roosevelt Jr.," though the notes describe that title as unverified, so the sitter's identity should be treated as provisional. The label points to the wife of Theodore Roosevelt's eldest son, whose own public career included service as assistant secretary of the Navy and later as governor of Puerto Rico. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency active in the early twentieth century, supplied news and society pictures to newspapers, which is why its plates record so many prominent figures of the period.
