The record gives this portrait the title "Mrs. Alex Roosevelt," but the Bain News Service supplied that name on the negative or caption card, and it has not been verified. The Bain agency was a New York press photo service that sold news pictures of public figures and everyday events from about 1900 into the 1920s. Its glass negatives, held by the Library of Congress, are a valuable record of that period, though the captions were sometimes written quickly and can contain errors. Because the sitter's identity is uncertain, the Roosevelt family placement on this board reflects the title rather than confirmed kinship.
