This 1916 glass negative shows a woman identified in its caption as "Mrs. Roosevelt" at a parade. The Bain News Service, which supplied the caption, did not always confirm names, so the record leaves open which Mrs. Roosevelt is pictured, though its placement among Theodore Roosevelt family images points to his wife, Edith. In 1916 the United States was debating military preparedness ahead of its entry into the First World War, and public parades and marches were common in New York and other cities. George Grantham Bain's agency photographed such events for newspapers, and the large glass plates it produced recorded crowds, dress and street life of the period.
