This glass negative records a group of women identified in the caption data as Mrs. B. Cochran, Mrs. O. Straus, Mrs. T. Roosevelt Jr., and Mrs. Straus again, with B. Cochran also listed. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news photographs in the early 20th century, supplied the negative, and the names come from its unverified caption data. Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was the wife of the former president's eldest son, and Oscar Straus served in Theodore Roosevelt's Cabinet, so the sitters' ties to the Roosevelt circle help place the picture in its social and political setting. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion remains uncertain.
