The two people pictured are Edith Roosevelt, wife of President Theodore Roosevelt, and their eldest son, Theodore Roosevelt Jr., born in 1887. Edith served as first lady from 1901 to 1909, a period when the Roosevelt family drew steady attention from the newspapers that bought photographs from the Bain News Service. The record gives no date for this 8-by-10-inch glass negative, and its title comes from unverified caption information, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Glass plates of this size were a common tool of press photographers in the early twentieth century.
