Theodore Roosevelt Jr., eldest son of the 26th president, is the figure named in this glass negative, which comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency that supplied newspapers from the early 1900s through the 1920s, produced and captioned much of this material, though the record notes that the identification is unverified and the date is unknown. Roosevelt Jr. later served as assistant secretary of the Navy and became governor-general of the Philippines, so a portrait of him from this period reflects the public visibility he gained as a Roosevelt heir.
